Abstract

Infection is the most common type of diseases suffered by the population in the developing countries. Most infections caused by the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The unidentified bacteria resistant to the antibiotic gentamicin. Gentamicin is one of broad spectrum antibiotics that can be used to treat the infection. Some medicinal plants helps to increase the activity of gentamicin in treating the infection. The purpose of this research is to know the effect of the combination of extracts of 10 medicinal plants against Pseudomonas aeruginosa with gentamicin and Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The extraction of 10 medicinal plants was done by using 96% ethanol by maceration method. The antibacterial 2 activity test was performed by diffusion method (Kirby Bauer). The extracts were prepared with concentration 10% using DMSO or ethanol. The combination of medicinal plan extracts and gentamicin was made by dripping 10 μL of the extract into the antibiotic disc. Extract the most potentially raise the activity of thin-layer chromatography tested gentamicin (TLC) using toluene : ethyl acetate : methanol : formic acid (4: 6: 1: 0,5) and silica gel stationary phase GF254. Test result gentamicin combination and antibacterial activity of extracts of caesalpinia sappan wood has an average diameter of the zones of highest inhibitory bacteria Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus of 12 mm and the zone of bacterial Pseudomonas aeruginosa on drag of 13.75 mm. Test results the identification using TLC shows that ethanol extracts of caesalpinia sappan wood allegedly contain brazilin and protosapanin A
