Abstract

Treatment for leukemia is classified into two, namely chemotherapy and supportive therapy. Chemotherapy is a drug use therapy to kill cancer cells. Side effects of chemotherapy depend on type, dose of drug, and how long the drug is obtained. Common side effects include hair loss, mouth ulcers, high risk of infection, easy bruising, fatigue, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. This makes the inconvenience to the child, so the parent of the leukemia child patient takes various actions to overcome the discomforts that result from the side effects of chemotherapy on her child. This study aims to know the various actions of parents to the side effects of chemotherapy in children with leukemia in Dr. Moewardi hospital Surakarta. The research used descriptive method. The sample of research were 20 respondents. Sampling technique using purposive sampling. The research instrument used questionnaire. Results: The side effect of chemopterapi in child leukemia is 1). 75% of children experience nausea, the parent's action is to give eucalyptus oil, 2). 75% vomiting, the action taken is to give anti-nausea and vomit medicine, given warm water, eucalyptus oil, and given oranges, 3). 40% hair loss, the action that parents do is cut hair, 4). 35% of mouth disorders, the action that parents do is to give medicine and canker syrup granted fruit, 5). 20% bruising, the action that parents do is to limit play activities and provide medicine, 6). 10% of diarrhea, the action that parents do is to give anti-diarrhea drugs. 7). 55% decrease appetite, parental action is to provide food according to child's favorite and supplement, 8). 70% fatigue, the action the parent does is tell the child to rest enough, 9). 60% increased risk of infection, the action taken is to keep the child clean. 10.) 25% anemia, the actions of parents are to provide foods containing iron such as green leafy vegetables, chicken liver, cows, and improve child rest, 11). 15% dry skin, the action that parents do is to provide body lotion and the use of bath soap in accordance with skin pH, 12). 15% constipation, parental action is to provide children with high fiber foods, giving laxative or laxative drugs.
