Abstract

This research paper is aimed to identify the linguistic elements configuring the discourse of editor’s stance of expression used in front cover of Tempo magazine, to describe the intention of editor’ stance of Tempo magazine. This research uses documentation methods to get the data. The data are written discourse of Tempo magazine cover which includes expression of words and illustration of picture. The data source is discourse in front cover of Tempo magazine published in 2008. To find out the linguistic elements configuring the discourse textuality, the researcher uses De Beau-grande and Dresser’s theory and to describe the intention of editor’s stance of Tempo magazine, the researcher uses Sperber’s and Wilson’s theory. The result of this study shows that first, there are 17 data of editor’s stance in cover of Tempo magazine that the linguistic elements to configure are 5 ellipses, 5 conjunctions and lexical cohesion is divided into two: First, reiteration such as 6 repetitions, 4 synonymy, 2 metonymy, 1 antonymy, and 1 hyponymy. Second, collocations there are 3 collocations of lexical cohesion. Next, there are 15 intentionality, 17 informativeness and 5 situationality. There are two types of theme contains 7 textual theme and 15 topical theme. The last for linguistic elements configuring the discourse of editor’s stance of expression used in front cover of Tempo magazine is deixis. There are three types of deixis contains 1 person deixis, 1 spatial deixis and 1 social deixis. Second, the intentions of editor’s stance are 9 types referring to Asking clarification expression and 8 types referring to information expression.
