Abstract
he major problem of this study is to reveal why the novel tries to respect for others’ rights and not take by force the others rights include morality messageinside reflected in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables viewed from a sociological approach. The writer conducts the research by using a qualitative method. The data source is divided into two categories, primary and secondary data. The primary data source is Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel entitled The House of the Seven Gables. The secondary data sources include such as essays, comments, historical information, bibliography, internet sources and other relevant information. The data source as collecting method is library research. The technique of the data analysis is descriptive. The outcome of this study shows the following conclusions. Firstly, based on structural analysis The House of the Seven Gables is both historical and gothic fiction, in which fact and fiction are combined. Hawthorne wants to deliver his moral message about the Original Sin, implying that crime and the wrongdoing done by someone can bring bad effect to the descendants. The inherited guilt implies that he has to ask a pardon for his ancestor’s past action. Secondly, based on the sociological analysis The House of the Seven Gables Hawthorne reflects social life in the social, economic, political, science and technology, cultural and religious aspects. He emphasized to the political and religious aspects that shows a negative effect of Puritanism where he describes about how a strong Puritan hanged a man for a religious reason. Respect for others rights is needed to press for the society, because it can brings the bad effect to their self, others, and also to the descendants. He criticizes the arbitrarily of the wealth people and have the authority which is grabbed the others’ rights. Respect for others’ rights is the eflection of honor values the others’ rights.
