Abstract

This research was done to reveal how anxiety of Saman in Ayu Utami`s SAMAN (1998) novel based on psychoanalytic approach and to examine the novel based on its structural elements. The analysis is done by determining the structural elements and the issue of anxiety based on psychoanalytic approach. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. There are two types of data sources. The primary data data sources is Ayu Utami`s SAMAN (1998) novel translated by Pamela Allen. The secondary data sources are books, journals, and internet sources related to the study. The two kinds of data collected by library research and internet then them by descriptive analysis. Based on the research findings, the researcher drew the following conclusion; first the structural elements of the novel contains character and characterization, setting of time and place, plot, point of view, and theme, had unite the novel thoroughly, second the problem faced by major character, Saman, influenced the three levels of anxiety, neurotic, reality and moral anxiety.
