Abstract
Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a strain of Staphylococcus aureus that is resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics that can cause infections such as sepsis, pneumonia and infections in other organs except lungs and blood. Currently, only few antibiotics can inhibit MRSA. Therefore alternative antibacterials are need to inhibit MRSA. Guava leaf (Psidium guajava L.), mint leaf (Mentha piperita), Lemongrass leaves (Cymbopogon nardus), ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale), and ambon banana midrib (Musa paradisiaca) have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The purpose of this research was to investigate the antibacterial activity of fifth plant extracts againts MRSA and to know the class of active compound in extract which had the highest antibacterial activity. The plants was extracted using maceration method with 96% ethanol. Screening of antibacterial activity used diffusion disc method with concentration of each extract 80%. Group of compounds were identified using thin layer chromatography. Bioautography test was used to identify group compounds that have antibacterial activity. The results of antibacterial activity test show that extract of guava leaf extract, mint leaf, lemongrass leaf, ginger rhizome, and ambon banana midrib had antibacterial activity against MRSA. Guava leaf extract had the higest antibacterial activity with inhibitor zone diameter is 11.33 ± 3.21 mm. Groups of compounds in guava leaves were tannins, terpenoids, saponins, and all three had antibacterial activity.
