Abstract

The purpose of this research was to: (1) describe the structure of a novel Menggapai Matahari by Adnan Katino, (2) describe the values character education in the novel Menggapai Matahari by Adnan Katino, and (3) describe the implementation of the values of the character education in the Indonesian Language learning materials in high school. This research uses qualitative descriptive method. The collected data is analyzed using the method of reading which is heuristic and semiotik hermeneutik. The results of this research indicate that: (1) structure of the builders Reaching the Sun novel can be described as follows. This novel brings the spirit of the theme of the struggle of a child to achieve the goals. The Groove that was used in the novel is forward flow. The character featured in the novels Menggapai Matahari are the Umi Kalsum, Kasimun, Bang Budi, Mini, Wak Yuti, Bang Munir, Bang Fadhli, Haris, Hasyim, Pak Kyai Zaini Hudhori, Ucu Yunus, Hambali, Pak Fuad Mahsun, Ucu Rojali, Wanto, Sugeng, dan Mas Fuad. The setting in the novel is divided into three: the setting of the place took place in North Sumatra, East Java, and Yogyakarta. Setting time occur more or less in the year 1973 until 1995. The social background of the novel describes the social life of Batak Mandailing. (2) values character education that is found in the novel there are nine the value of the character that is religious, honest, discipline, hard work, creative, independent, curiosity, social care, and responsibility. (3) the results of the analysis of the values of the character education in the novel Reach the Sun can be implemented as an Indonesian Language learning materials in high school by using the core competencies and competency basis 3.1 and 4.1.
