Abstract
The problem of the study is to reveal how the major character reflects her existence. The objective of the study is to analyze the novel based on its structural analysis and based on the existentialism analysis. This study is qualitative study. The object of the study is Lydia’s Unexplained Laughter published in 1986 in Penguin Books by Gerald Duckworth& Co. the data source divided into two, namely primary data source and secondary data source. The primary data source is the novel itself and the secondary data source is the other sources related to the analysis such as the author’s bibliography. The method of data collection is descriptive analysis. There are two results of the study shows that the major character faces the conflict in her life. Firstly, based on the structural analysis, it is evident that in this novel, Ellis wants to deliver a massage that unusual experience may lead to the quest meaningful life. Secondly, based on the existentialism analysis also shows man’s effort to seek for meaningful life in facing existence for the society process and the final decision result is freedom.
