Abstract
This research paper is aimed at giving a description of speech error phenomena which occur in one of the English Programs on Damashinta FM in Pekalongan. The program is Damashinta Sunday Work Out. This research is to find out the types of speech error, the frequency of speech error and describe the sources of speech error in that English program. This research is intended to help the listeners comprehend speech error phenomenon so that they are careful in producing language. The type of the research is qualitative. The writer records English conversation on Damashinta Sunday Work Out as the source of data. The data are all utterances containing speech errors made by the broadcasters and the callers in that program. She analyzes the data based on psycholinguistic approach. From the data analysis, the writer finds all types of speech error based on the theory of Clark and Clark and other psycholinguists. The writer identifies 9 speech errors with the frequencies as follows: silent pause (40 or 19, 05 %), filled pause (105 or 50 %), repeat (23 or 10, 95 %), retraced false start (9 or 4, 3 %), unretraced false start (3 or 1, 3 %), correction (14 or 6, 67 %), interjection (1 or 0, 47 %), stutter (12 or 5, 7 %), and slip of the tongue (3 or 1,43 %). In the mean time, the writer finds some sources that cause speech errors. They are the result of gross difficulties of the speaker to plan and execute speech at the same time, such as silent pause, filled pause, repeat, retraced and unretraced false starts, correction, interjection and stutter. The second source is the result of more localized difficulties speakers has in forming the articulatory program to guide the articulatory muscles in the production of sounds, as in slip of the tongue.
