Abstract

This research objectives are classifying the figurative language expression based on human perceptual system and describing the contextual meaning of the figurative language expression used in Westlife song lyrics on Westlife album. As it is assumed that lyric is one of several human’s medium of language use. The type of the study is qualitative research by using descriptive method. The objects of the study are figurative language used in the song lyrics of Westlife album. The data are lyrics of the songs taken from this album entitled Coast to Coast album. And the method of the data collection is documentation while techniques are; reading and learning method from the text of Westlife album, selecting the figurative language found in the songs, and classifying the data. The result of the study indicates that in Westlife song lyrics on Westlife’s album use figurative language dominated by personification as their creativity of mind expressions. Besides, the writer also finds other of figurative language namely; hyperbole, simile, metaphor, synecdoche. In Westlife’s album, this album uses several symbols of human perceptual system namely; being, energy, substance, object, animate, human/man. In addition, in Westlife song lyrics on Westlife’s album, this album conveys various messages for the audience about human’s life with different condition and feeling. There is information and human life behind the album and based on the frequency of occurred of contextual meaning, this album uses figurative language mostly is to describe human’s life.
