Abstract
The aim this research is to describe the principal’s leadership to improve the quality of learning, strategies used by the principal in improving the quality of learning, and obstacles faced by the principal. Type of research is qualitative with ethnographic design. The interviews are the principals, vice principals of the curriculum, vice principals of infrastructure, teachers, and student of class XI SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta. Data collection techniques in this research are interviews, observation, and documentation. The data validity used trianggulation in the research. Data analysis techniques through data collection steps, presentation, data reduction and conclusions. Research result show that: (1) by applying a type of leadership that is democratic and participative leadership style turned out to school leadership in SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta able to provide an increase in the quality of learning this can be seen from the increase of the achievements in the academic field, both of the activities in the school and outside the school environment. (2) strategies used principals in an effort to improve the quality of teaching is as follows: (a) increasing the skills and ability of teachers to include teachers in seminars, workshops or training that can improve teaching quality, (b) implement a program for students able to develop creativity and make the students the ability to innovate, (c) meet the needs of students in both the infrastructure and services to students. (3) the constraints faced by principals in SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta are: (a) lack of awareness of the school community in maintaining existing infrastructure, (b) lack of budget the school so that the school should be able to cooperate with outsiders to reduce the burden of the budget school. (c) there are still some teachers who are hard to follow the program applied particularly in the collection of administrative discipline of learning, (d) some students are still not feel confident in expressing their opinions and ideas are still monotonous.
