Abstract
This research paper is aimed at describing the implementation of role play technique in teaching speaking using role play and the student’s response to the teaching speaking using role play strategies at the first semester students of English department in UMS. The writer conducts naturalistic qualitative research. The data used in this research are derived from event, and informant. The data are quoted from observation and interview with the teacher and the students. Based on the observation and interview, the writer draws some conclusion about the implementation of role play in teaching speaking at the first semester students of English department in UMS as follows: (1) Role play is implemented in teaching speaking at the first semester students of English department in Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The teacher only implements nine from ten steps in teaching speaking using role play. The teacher doesn’t use role cards step because role cards is usually used for lower level students. So, the teacher has mastered the role play technique well. (2) In teaching speaking using role play, the teacher has problem. Thst is monitoring student’s speech. For example teacher can’t get near enough to her students to hear them, the teacher can’t hear any errors, and the teacher can’t write down all their errors. (3) There are three stages in response or feedback done by the students namely preparation stage, presentation stage, and post presentation stage.
