Abstract

The study aims to find out whether or not neighbourhood walk or outdoor activity can improve the student’s vocabulary mastery at SD N 1 Kedungwaduk. This research applied Classroom Action Research (CAR) was done in SD N 1 Kedungwaduk Sragen. The writer took the students of class IV of SD N 1 Kedungwaduk Sragen in 2007/2008 academic year as the subject of the study. To collect the data, the writer conducted observation, interview, and test. Observation is an activity in certain situation to get the data. Interview is a dialogue done by the writer to get information from the interviewee. The writer conducted Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consists of three cycles, each cycle consist of four elements, namely: planning, acting/implementing, and reflecting. The problem found the first cycle and the second cycles. The problem in the first cycle is that usually the students are got difficulty to memorize the words and they easily get bored in studying English. And the problem in the second cycles is that the students are not active to study English. To answer those problems the writer invited the students to neighbourhood walk or used outdoor activities combined with games, song, and puzzle. The result of the research show that (1) there were 15 students who increased vocabulary achievement (2) there were 4 students who decreased their vocabulary achievement (3) there were 5 students who are static or did not develop their vocabulary achievement. The students feel happy and can be more active and enjoy in studying English and they can easily memorize the English words. The result of the research able shows that the result of pre-test is 78,54 and post-test is 85,83. It means that the student’s vocabulary increases after they are taught by through neigbourhood walk or outdoor activity. The conclusion is teaching vocabulary by through neighbourhood walk at SD N 1 Kedungwaduk Sragen is effective.
