Abstract

This study is aimed to describe the implementation, the effectiveness, and the students’ response on jigsaw in teaching reading. The result of the study is expected to give contribution the teaching and learning of reading. The study was implemented in SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta, especially class X3 using action research. The writer took 35 students as the subject of research. The object of the research was the students’ answer on written test in the form of quiz, pre-test, post-test, and observation sheet. The result of the study shows that the students’ motivation improves in teaching learning process of reading. The improvement of the students’ achievement can be seen from t-test result. The students accepted and joined the jigsaw implementation of jigsaw because they could follow the cooperative learning principles and jigsaw component. Meanwhile, to find the significant difference between students’ achievement before and after the action, the writer used paired t-test. The result showed that the t-observation is greater than the t-table. It means that there is significant difference result of the post-test and pre-test. The result of post-test is better than of the result of pre-test. That means the teaching reading using jigsaw is successful to improve students’ motivation and students’ achievement.
