Abstract
Background: Ginger rhizome plant (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb) contains curcumin, xanthorrizhol and flavonoids. They are expected to have an analgesic effect. Objective: To determine the analgesic effect of the 70% ethanolic extract of ginger rhizome (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb) and to determine the effective dose of the extract. Methods: This study used experimental laboratory methods With Post Test Only Control Group Design. The animals were 25 male Swiss strain mice 2-3 months old, weight 20-30 grams, and were divided into 5 groups: control group was treated by distilled water, Positive Control group was treated by aspirin 1.3 mg/20gBW, Group I, II and III treated by ginger rhizome extract a dose of 140 mg extract /KgBW, 280 mg/KgBW and 560 mg/KgBW respectively. Each group was stretched and the frequencies calculated using the writhing test. The data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA test followed by LSD (Least Significant Difference). Results: The ethanolic extract of ginger rhizome dose of 140 mg/KgBW, 280 mg/KgBW and 560 mg/KgBW had an analgesic effect with a mean frequency of writhing in a row was 179.40 times, 53.20 times and 22.20 times. Analysis of the data one-way ANOVA showed significantly different mean frequency of writhing in the of all groups p = 0.005 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The 70% ethanolic extract of ginger rhizome (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb) was dose of 140 mg/KgBW, 280 mg/KgBW and 560 mg/KgBW have analgesic effect in male mice Swiss strain. While the dose of 280 mg/KgBW and 560 mg/KgBW are effective analgesic dose.
