Abstract

This research paper is aimed to find out the correlation between the students’ interest in listening to Westlife songs and their understanding of the songs of English Department students of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. In this research the writer uses questionnaire and listening test as the instrument. Questionnaire is used to know the students' interest in listening to Westlife songs while test is used to measure the students' understanding of the songs. Before the research conducted, the writer tries out the instrument. The try out conducted to know the validity and reliability of the instrument. There are 20 respondents from class A who join the try out. After that the writer computes the data of try out uses Alpha Cronbach formula. Based on the result of the data computation, the writer concludes that both of the instruments are valid and reliable. After conducting the try out, the writer holds the test to the students for the research. There are 40 students from class A of the third semester students of English Department who join the test. After the data collected, the writer computes them uses correlation product moment formula by helping SPSS computer program. The statistical data analysis shows that the obtained r xy is 0.556 while r table is 0.444 at the level of significant 0.5. It means that the obtained r xy is higher than r table, because the obtained r xy 0.556 is positive, so, there is a positive correlation between the students’ interest in listening to Westlife songs and their understanding of the songs of English Department students of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. Based on the result of regression, the contribution of the interest in listening to Westlife songs increses their understanding of the songs is 0.309%. It means that the interest in listening to Westlife songs has a role in increasing their understanding of the songs. Based on the result of the research finding the writer concludes that the students having a great interest in listening to Westlife songs will get exposure to the songs, so that they will get input from the songs and they will know the content of the songs.
