Abstract
The problem of the study is the traumatic experience focused on the major character namely Mrs. Popov in Chekov’s The Brute. This study is a qualitative study. The research uses two data sources, namely primary data source and secondary data source. The primary data source is the data taken from the text of The Brute by Anton Chekov, the English version by Eric Bentley (1958). The secondary data source is other source related to the analysis such as the author biography, books about the psychology, particularly related to the psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud, and internet. Based on the analysis, this study shows the traumatic experience of the major character. The traumatic experience is reflected on Mrs. Popov when her husband passed away, she decided not to get out of her house again; she wanted to burry herself in the house and sees no one anymore. The reason was that she was traumatic with love, with her husband betrayal by cheating on her when he was still alive. The reactions towards her traumatic are mostly triggered by Smirnov, her husband is debt collector. He wanted to collect the money borrowed by her husband. She experienced intense emotion and reactivity (mostly anger and anxiety), flashback, and numbness. Those are emotional reactions. The physical reactions are weakness, dizziness and fatigue and also being startled easily because Smirnov yelled at her most of the time.
