Abstract

The research paper is aimed to describe the linguistics form and the meaning of swear word found in the Indonesian and western movies. This research is conducted by comparing 1) the linguistics form types of the swear word employed by the characters in the Indonesian and english movies, and 2) the meaning of the swear word found in the english and indonesian movies. This research applies a comparative qualitative research. This research uses a socio-pragmatics approach. The technique of sampling used in this study is purposive sampling. All conversations containing swear words was taken as data. The results of analysis show that 1) there are five types of linguistics form of swear words employed by the characters in the movies, namely, single word, compound word, noun phrase, verb phrase and adjective phrase, and 2) there are also seven meanings of swear words found in this research, namely to express anger, to intensify, to express annoyance, to insult, to disprove one’s statement, to express surprise and to mock. The usage of single word type is more dominant than other type of linguistics form both in English and Indonesian swear words because single word is the simplest form of word, short, brief and efficient. In English swear words there are others linguistics form is in the form of phrase. While in Indonesian swear words there is no another linguistics form found in the movies. The English swear words which are found by the researcher in the movies mostly have meaning to intensify. The second common meaning of English swears word found in the movies is to express anger. The next meaning is to express annoyance, to insult, to disprove one’s statement, to express surprise and to mock. While in Indonesian swear words the most dominant meaning of swear words is to express anger because people can express anger in a short and brief.
