Abstract
Introduction: Spinal cord injury is an injury to the spine, either directly or indirectly that can cause permanent disability or death. Spinal cord injury can result in neurological reflex depression. Tryptophan intake can reduce depression status because tryptophan is the raw material production of serotonin. Serotonin in the brain can make the body become quieter and easier to sleep. Selenium intake is sufficient to prevent the occurrence of neuroendocrine dysregulation in depression. Objective: The aim of study was to determine the relationship between the intake of tryptophan and selenium with status of depression in patients with spinal cord injuries in the RSO. Prof. Dr. R. Soeharso Surakarta. Methods: This study used observational analytic design with cross sectional approach. Number of samples of 35 people according to the inclusion criteria. Sampling by means of consecutive sampling. Data obtained through food intake recall 24 hours over four days. While the status of data obtained through questionnaires BDI depression (Beck Depression Inventory). Statistical test using the Spearman Rank test. Results: Subjects have less tryptophan intake as much as 91.4% and less selenium intake as much as 97.1%. Subjects who have depression status largely tryptophan and selenium intake is less. There is no relationship between the level of intake of tryptophan with depression status (p = 0.281) and there was no association between selenium intake level with depression status (indigo p = 0.446). Conclusion: To sum up there was no correlation between the intake of tryptophan with depression status indicated by the value of p = 0.281. There is no relationship between selenium intake with depression status indicated by the value of p = 0.446.
