Abstract

This research paper analyzes the figurative language used in Evanescence’s song lyrics. There are two objective of the study: to find out the types of figurative language and to find out the meaning of figurative language in evanescence’s song Album “Fallen”. Based on the objectives of the study, it uses a descriptive qualitative method in collecting the data Evanescence’s song album “Fallen”. The population is all the figurative language by the character in album. There are 62 data which belong to type figurative language strategies based on Perrine theory’s. From the data analysis, the researcher finds five types of figurative language from the sentences in Evanescence’s song album, namely: (1) Hyperbole 37.10%. (2)Personification 27,42%. (3)Metaphor 20.90%. (4)Apostrophe 9.67% and (5)Simile 4.85%. In the analysis of meaning of Figurative Language the researcher find thirteen there are: (1) Expressing Desire 14.52%. (2) Expressing Madness 12.90%. (3) Expressing Longing 12.90%. (4) Expressing Loneliness 11.29%. (5) Expressing Desperate 11.29%. (6) Expressing Sadness 9.68%. (7) Expressing Hopelessness 8.06%. (8) Expressing Love 6.45%. (9) Expressing Curiosity 4.84%. (10) Expressing Spirit 3.22. (11) Expressing Disappointment 1.61%. (12) Expressing Patience 1.61%. (13) Expressing Fear 1.61%. In the type of figurative the higher frequency is hyperbole, the use of hyperbole strengthens the feeling in the way of telling something more that the truth. Simile is the lowest frequency because it is can’t give the good meaning in the lyrics. And in the meaning of Figurative Language the higher frequency is expressing desire, it used to make the listeners can catch the support from composer. And the lowest number are expressing disappointment, fear and patience because the composer want to sent message that this meanings doesn’t useful to the listeners.
