Abstract

This research is carried out to find out the types of sentence used in request strategies are found in the novel The Glass House and to explain the types of request strategy are used in the novel. Based on the objectives of the study, the study uses a descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data the researcher takes the novel entitled The Glass House by Lynn Bushell as source. The object is all the request strategies spoken by the character in the novel. There are 59 data which belong to request strategies. From the data analysis, the researcher finds three types of sentence used in request strategies, namely: (1) Imperative sentences have 16 data (27,12%). The imperative sentences is used to express feeling which coverage request and usually has the subject is the second person. (2)Declarative sentences have 21 data (35,59%). In using declarative sentence, the speaker delivers news or pronouncements which are positive or negative, true or lie. (3)Interrogative sentences have 22 data (37, 29%). The interrogative sentence indicates that the speaker gives an option to addressee which will complies with the speaker’s not sure and usually used request strategies. In the form of interrogative sentence usually starts with 5W (What, Where, Why, Who, When) and 1H (How) question or started with auxiliary verb/modal and ended with question mark. The last result, the researcher finds five types of request strategies, namely: (1) Requests for action have 12 data (20,34%). Requests for action are request strategies that prospect an addressee’s action. It is for the benefit of the speaker. (2)Requests for permission have 10 data (16,95%). Requests for permission are request strategies that prospect potentially the speaker’s action. It is for the benefit of the speaker. (3)Offers have 24 data(40,68%). Offers are request strategies that prospect potentially a speaker’s actions. It is for the benefit of the addressee. (4) Invitation has 9 data (15,25%). Invitations are request strategies that prospect the addressee’s action. (5)Proposals have 4 data (6,78%). Proposals are request strategies that prospect both a speaker’s action and an addresses action
