Abstract
This research aims at finding the operations of condensation and describing the appropriate and inappropriate subtitling in The Departed Movie. To get the answers of those problems, the writer uses descriptive method. To get the methods of condensation the writer uses condensation strategy theory. To describe appropriate and inappropriate subtitling the writer uses readability and equivalence. The results of the research show that: first, there are two operations of condensation which are used by the subtitler in subtitling. They are by deleting the words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverb, and pronouns) and by deleting and replacing the phares (noun phrases and preposistional phrase) from the source language. Second, Most of the subtitling which had been already condensed by the subtitler are appropriate. The subtitler uses condensation because she/he attempts to accomplish the appropriate subtitling. Considering the result of the research, there is also inappropriate subtitling. If the audiences read the inappropriate subtitling, they are difficult to understand the message or can interrupt their concentration in observing the movie. Therefore, the subtitler should keep the subtitle as appropriate as possible.
