Abstract
The objectives of this research are to describe the English teachinglearning process of teaching speaking in secretary class focused in curriculum, method, media and evaluation system and to describe the problems faced the teacher and students. This research was undertaken in Balai Besar Latihan Kerja Industri Surakarta. The subject of the research are the teacher and 16 secretary students. The writer collected the data of the research through observation, interview and document. The result of the data analysis shows that BBLKI Surakarta used Competence Based Training curriculum as a teaching guideline which is made by The Man Power and Transmigration Minister to fulfill the industrial need. it’s appropriate to students to prepare the students in real work so that they have some competencies to compete with others. The syllabus of teaching English is arranged by the English teacher who teaches the lesson. The objectives of teaching speaking is to make the students be able to communicate English in order the students can apply it in field work. The teacher not only uses textbook as a material but also uses the cassette to make the students understand more. The method used in teaching speaking is Communicative Language Teaching. The method is appropriate with the students because it’s focuses on communicative competence. The teacher gives opportunities to use language so it makes the students active in speech. The English teacher uses some of media in teaching speaking such as: card, language laboratory, office equipment and the real thing to facilitate the students in learning. The students can understand more if the is any real thing so the students can easy to memorize it. The teacher uses direct evaluation in teaching speaking to assess the student’s capability. The teacher and students faced some problem in teaching speaking. The teacher’s problems are around the students ability and the time allocation. The student’s problems are about their communicative skill such as: grammar, pronunciation, limited vocabulary, meaning of the word and shyness. The writer concludes that the curriculum, method, media and evaluation system is good because these are appropriate with the students to improve the output quality.
