Abstract

The study aims to classify the translation shifts of passive voice and to describe the equivalence on the Indonesian of passive voice in Sidney Sheldon’s novel The Best Laid Plans into Rencana paling Sempurna by Hendarto Setiadi. The study is descriptive qualitative, in which the writer wants to know and tries to describe the phenomenon in the passive voice and analyses them. The data are the passive voice in the novel The Best Laid Plans and its translation. The data are collected and analyzed based on the theory of translation shift and equivalence. The results of the study show that, 1). There are four varieties of translation shift, namely simple passive voice sentence is translated into simple passive voice sentence, complex passive voice sentence is translated into complex passive voice sentence, simple passive voice sentence is translated into complex passive voice sentence, and compound passive voice sentence is translated into compound passive voice sentence, and 2). There are five types of equivalence, namely, denotative equivalence, pragmatic equivalence, text normative equivalence, and connotative equivalence.
