Abstract
This research is aimed at describing the elements of configuration of condolence messages and finding out the intentions of condolence messages. The objects to be analyzed are condolence expressions for Steve Irwin in his website focusing on the utterances. The data are the texts of condolence expression sent by people in Steve Irwin website. In collecting data, the writer uses document by looking for the condolence messages for Steve Irwin in internet. To identify the configuration elements, the writer uses the elements of configuration which exist in condolence messages. To clarify the intention, the writer uses pragmatic analysis, especially speech act theory. The writer classifies the locution and illocution of the condolence expression but it is impossible to clarify the perlocution since the impacts of the expression toward the hearer are not visible. Having analyzed the data, the writer finds that there are five elements of configuration of condolence messages; they are comfort, support, sympathy, empathy, and compassion. Every message minimum consists of one element and maximum of four elements. The intentions of the condolence expression are reassuring, suggesting, thanking, committing, and informing.
