Abstract
This research is aimed at Identifying linguistic forms, finding out the speaker’s intention and illuminating the reason of employing apology expressions. The objects to be analyzed are apology expressions focusing on the utterances in the form of word, phrase, clause, and sentence. The writer takes the data from some drama movies and their manuscripts entitled Chasing Liberty, Notting Hill, and Runaway Bride. In collecting data, the writer uses recording and documentation analysis method by selecting the apology expressions which can be found in those drama movie manuscripts. To identify the form, the writer uses linguistic form. To clarify the speaker’s intention, the writer uses pragmatics analysis, especially locutionarry, illocutionary, and perlocutionary. To illuminate the reason, the writer employs Dell Hymes’s Speaking Grid. Having analyzed the data, the writer finds that (1) the linguistic patterns of apology expressions, they are verb, noun phrase, verb phrase, declarative sentence, interrogative sentence, imperative sentence, and exclamatory sentence. (2) The speaker’s intentions of speech act classification are showing declarative, showing representative, showing directive, and showing expressive. (3) The reasons of the speaker are showing regret, showing guilty, showing dislike, showing politeness, showing rejection, showing teasing, showing anger, showing confusion, showing power, showing forgiveness, showing shame, and showing sympathy.
