Abstract

This research was conducted to describe the types of address forms used by the characters in the film Pearl Harbor, the communicative functions of addresses and the social meaning of the addresses. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The source of data is the film entitled Pearl Harbor. The data are transcript of dialogs containing address forms spoken by the characters in the film. After 71 dialogs were taken, the data were classified based on position of the characters in the social communication and subdivided into the kind of address forms used. The result of the analysis is as follows: Firstly, the types of addresses by characters in the film Pearl Harbor are addressing using title, addressing using multiple names, addressing using last name, addressing using title + last name, addressing using full name and addressing using first name. Secondly, the interpretation of communicative functions in the film Pearl Harbor are to show formality, to show respect, to insult the addressee, to warn addressee, to praise addressee, to make a close relationship, to persuade the addressee, to show intimacy, to show solidarity, to show power and to greet addressee. Thirdly, the social meanings of address form in the film Pearl Harbor are social distance scale, social status scale, formality scale and functions scale.
