Abstract
This research paper studies about commissive utterance in the headline of the Jakarta Post edition May 1-5 2007. The object used to be analyzed are commissive utterance in the form of sentence. In collecting the data, the writer uses document method by selecting commissive utterances, which can be found in the headline of The Jakarta Post edition May 1-5 2007. This research is aimed at describing the forms and finding out the speaker’s intention. To describe the form, the writer refers to grammatical rules. While to describe the meaning, the writer uses pragmatics approach especially speech acts theory. Having analyzed the data, the writer finds that there is one form of sentence namely declarative sentence. The speaker’s intentions are promising, warning, offering, and threatening.
