Abstract
This research paper elaborates struggle for achieving happiness of Maggie Tulliver in George Eliot’s novel, The Mill on the Floss, which is analyzed through individual psychological approach. The objectives of the research are to analyze the structural elements of the novel and to analyze the novel based on individual psychological perspective. This study is qualitative study using the novel of George Eliot’s The Mill on the Floss as the object of the study. There are two kinds of data sources primary and secondary. The primary data source is the text of the novel George Eliot’s The Mill on the Floss and the secondary data sources are some books and articles related to the subject. The method of collecting data in the research is library research by summarizing, paraphrasing, and documenting the data. In analyzing data, the writer employs descriptive analysis. Having analyzed the novel, the writer comes to the conclusions as follows: First, having analyzed the structural elements of George Eliot’s The Mill on the Floss, it can be concluded that George Eliot has successfully combined all the structural elements. Second, based on individual psychological analysis, in this novel reflects Maggie’s coping behavior to minimize her inferiority feeling and maximize her superiority in order to get her life goals.
