Abstract

The major problem of the research on The Strange Case of DR. Jekyll and Mrs. Hyde is how split personality is described in Robert Louis Stevenson. Meanwhile. The problem is limited on the major character Dr. Jekyll viewed by Psychoanalytic Approach. The objectives of the study are to analyze novel based on the structural elements and the personality of the major character based on the Psychoanalytic Approach. The benefit of the study is to give additional information taht can be used by the other literature researches who are interested in analyzing this novel. The type of the reserach is qualitative method, the study used teo data sources, the primary data source is the novel itself and secondary data source are biography of the author, other sources that support the analysis the method of the data collection in this research is documentation, the technique of the data nalysis is descriptive qualitative analysis. Based on the analysis the outcome of this study shows that the problems of the major character causes the internal conflict of dr. Jekyll. then, the separates hos character into shape of Hyde. His ways is unnatural and irrational, finally, it causes him to do suicide.
