Abstract
This research is aimed at knowing whether or not the student’s have adequate vocabulary mastery in learning English, at knowing the student’s participation during English teaching learning process using the Direct Method (DM) to improve the student’s vocabulary mastery, and describing the achievement of the student’s vocabulary mastery in their test result. The result of this research hopefully will give contribution in learning English. In this research, DM is used to improve student’s vocabulary mastery in learning English using. This research was carried out at SDN 02 Jaten, Juwiring Klaten, especially in class Iv that consist of 16 students. To collect the required data, the writer did observation, gave test, and used documentation. There were three cycles in this action research in which each cycle used pre-test and post-test. He analyzed the data by comparing the result of pre-test and post-test. The result of pre-test and post-test were used to know the score of the vocabulary mastery. The mean of the student’s vocabulary mastery after the teacher did the actio n was 72, 50% that belongs to good category and the mean of the student’s mean score was 72,50. while, before the teacher did the action, the mean of the student’s vocabulary mastery was 44, 16% that belongs to fair category and the mean of the student’s vocabulary mastery was 44, 16. Based on the research finding, it can be concluded that the result of the student’s achievement showed that Direct Method (DM) in teaching vocabulary could improve the student’s participation and achievement better. The student’s score was getting better in each cycle. It indicates that the teaching learning process is successful, both the researcher and the student’s gained the objective. Therefore, it is better for the students to study English carefully trough practice and experience, and to be active and creative in learning English. While, the English teacher has to teach the students with DM by doing so, the teacher will be able to manage an interesting classroom and to prepare the lessons they are going to teach as well as possible.
