Abstract

This research paper is aimed at giving an analysis of the seven criteria of textuality which make a short story of O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi” a discourse. The objective of the study is to classify which types of the seven criteria of textuality which are frequently used to make the short story a discourse. This research is descriptive qualitative research. In collecting data, the writer employs observation method by technique reading, selecting, and noting. The writer analyzes the discourse in the short story using the short story of O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi” itself as the primary data source. Meanwhile, the writer also used any literature related to this study. The collected data are analyzed by means of discourse analysis. Based on the analysis, the conclusion are as follows: In the short story of O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi”, the writer finds five types of cohesion those are reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. In reference the author does not use comparative reference, substitution the author does not use clausal substitution only. In ellipsis, clausal ellipsis is not used. Then, in conjunction, all types of conjunction are used except causality conjunction. And the last, in lexical cohesion, antonym that is not used. In addition, other six criteria of textuality: coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informativity, situationality, and intertextuality are used to make the short story of O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi” a discourse. Thus, these seven criteria of textuality provided a great deal of information in the short story of O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi”. Furthermore, they gave the connection inside the text that refers to the whole idea of the short story of O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi”, which also make this short story a discourse.
