Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the forms of code mixing and the reasons of using code mixing in the novel Lupus Returns: Cewek Junkies by Hilman Wijaya. The forms of code mixing are classified based on the Suwito’s code mixing classification and the reasons of using code mixing by the characters of novel are desdribed based on Ohiowutun’s motives and Hymes’s SPEAKING theory.The research uses descriptive qualitative research. The object of the researchis Indonesia n-English code mixing used in the Lupus Returns: Cewek Junkies novel. The data are Indonesian-English code mixing sentences used in the novel Lupus Returns: Cewek Junkies by Hilman Wijaya. The data source is Indonesia-English code mixing sentences in the Lupus Returns: Cewek Junkies novel by Hilman Wijaya published on July 2007. The method of collecting data is documentation, and the technique of data analysis is switched on the classification of the forms of code mixing by Suwito and the description of the reasons of using code mixing based on Ohiowutun’s motives and Hymes’s SPEAKING theory.The result of the analysis shows that (1) there are six forms of code mixing: words (64,70 %), phrase (15,30 %), hybrid (5,88 %), reduplication (2,36 %), idiom (4,70 %), and clause (7,06 %), (2) there are two kinds of reason of using code mixing by the character of novel: need filling motive and other reasons.
