Abstract

This research study is aimed at describing the teaching of listening skill using guided questions for the seventh year students of SMPN 1 Gemolong and the problem faced by the teacher in implementing the technique. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The researcher collects the data by observing English class and conducting in depth interview with the teacher and students of SMPN 1 Gemolong. The data include field notes and interview transcript. From the data analysis of research finding and discussion, the researcher draws some conclusion. The first, in Teaching Listening Skill Using Guided Questions, the teacher always gives exercise task or activities guided by the teacher. The activity is divided into three stages, namely pre- listening (it is warming up stage in which the activity has the purpose of getting the students stimulated, relaxed, motivated, attentive, or otherwise engaged and ready for the classroom activities), whilst- listening (there are several classroom activities such as repetition, matching items that have the same meaning as those hear from the recording, completing recording utterance, and etc), and post- listening (it is follow up or summary from what has been learned such as retailing the story, debate, conversation, correcting the exercise together, etc). The second, the roles of teacher are to manage the classroom activities, to guide the students, to provide facilities for teaching learning English, and to organize students to do various activities whether the roles of students are as subject and negotiator. The third, the problems faced by the students are limited vocabulary, the accent and speed of native speaker which can make it difficult for the students to catch the message of the target language. Finally, the researcher concludes that SMPN 1 Gemolong is one of the schools that impleme nts Guided Questions in teaching listening skill. Seeing the results of the study, the English teacher at SMPN 1 Gemolong can get better teaching learning process by combining the context and the content in teaching listening skill using guided question. Thus the material can be delivered maximally.
