Abstract

This research is intended to describe the constituents of prepositional phrase within noun phrase in the articles of Campus Asia Magazine and the status of prepositional phrase within noun phrase construction in the articles of Campus Asia Magazine. The method of data collection is observation and documentation. The writer takes 32 data of noun phrases in the Time to Laugh and Spiritual Growth articles of Campus Asia Magazine. The study is descriptive qualitative. This means that the writer explains the constituents of prepositional phrase and the status of prepositional phrase within noun phrase or prepositional phrase which function as adjectival in the articles of Campus Asia Magazine. The analysis of the constituents of prepositional phrase within noun phrase construction of the articles is based on the syntactic structure, what are the elements which structured in the PP construction. While the analysis of the status of prepositional phrase within noun phrase construction is based on X-bar theory, using tree diagram will have status of either optional (adjunct) or obligatory (complement). The result shows that the constituents of prepositional phrase within noun phrase in syntactic structure are: PP stands as post modifier in the NP and P as the head of PP is followed by NP which modifies the head of PP. While the status of PP within NP are : NP NP + PP (optional), NP NP + PP (obligatory), NP NP + PP (obligatory) + PP (optional), and NP NP + PP (optional) + PP (obligatory) + PP (optional).
