Abstract

This study aims at describing the English vocabulary teaching and learning to the third year students, finding the methods and the techniques used by the teacher, finding the problem faced by the students and finding the teacher’s act to solve the problem. This research is carried out at SDN 1 Karangnongko, Klaten. The subject of the study is the third year students of SDN 1 Karangnongko consisting of 24 students. In this research the data are derived from event, informant, and document. There are three methods of collecting data, namely observation, interview, and documentation. After doing the research, the writer has some conclusions. The first, the teacher uses Grammar Translation Method (GTM) in teaching English vocabulary and the memorization as the technique. The second, reading, writing and pronouncing the English words are the problems usually faced by the students in learning English vocabulary. The third, drilling and repeating the lesson especially in their translation are the ways done by the teacher to solve the student’s problems. From the research finding, the writer concludes that the English vocabulary teaching and learning process is still traditional. The teacher is the center of the class and the students are only the object of the learning process. It is better for the students to study English carefully through practice and experience, and to be active and creative in learning English vocabulary. While the teacher should teach students using various methods and techniques, process considerable knowledge to manage an interesting classroom, and prepare the lesson they are going to teach as well as possible.
