Abstract

The problem of this study is to reveal how the major character reflects his ego defense mechanism. The objective of this study is to analyze the movie based on structural elements and to analyze ego defense mechanism on Edward Zwick’s Blood Diamond based on psychoanalytic analysis. This research paper belongs to qualitative study. The object of this study is Edward Zwick’s Blood Diamond movie. The data sources are primary and secondary data sources. The primary data sources are the movie Blood Diamond and its script, and the secondary data are related to the primary data that support the analysis such as some books of psychology and website related to the research. The method used for collecting data is library research and documentation. The technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis. Based on the analysis, the writer finds that, 1) the problem faced by the major character is his struggle to escape from his condition, it causes him to use ego defense mechanism such as repression, projection, displacement. rationalization, reaction formation, regression, sublimation, denial. 2) the most dominant type of ego defense mechanism that is used by Archer is regression.
