Abstract

The aims of this research are to classify the strategies in translating the swearing utterances in the film entitled Sideways and to describe accuracy of the translation of the swearing into Indonesian.This research belongs to descriptive research. The sources of the data are Sideways movie translation. The data of this research are sentences containing Swearing utterances, such as asshole, the hell, dumb fuck, fuckface, fucker, bitch, balling etc. The result shows that there are six strategies used by the translator in translating swearing utterances. They are; translation by using swearing word or phrase of similar either expressive meaning or form which consists of 14 data translation by using swearing word or phrase of dissimilar either expressive meaning or form which consist of 1 data, translation by using swearing word or phrase of less expressive meaning which consists of 5 data, translation by using neutral word or phrase which consists of 21 data, translation by using proper interjection which consists of 10 data, and translation by omission which consists of 49 data. Meanwhile the accuracy of the translation they are; highly accurate translation which consists of 7 data (47%), accurate which consists of 37 data (37%), less accurate which consists of 6 data (6%), omitted or misinterpreted which consists of 10 data (10%).
