Abstract

The object of the research is the novel entitled The God of Small Things written by Arundhati Roy. The study focuses on the sociological aspect of the novel. The major problem of this study is “What is the social stratification which appears in The God of Small Thing?” this approach is aimed at analyzing the social stratification in the story. This research is qualitative approach. The primary data source is any source related to the analysis like theory of sociology of literature by Swing wood. The method of the data collection is documentation research. The technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis. The result of the study reveals the relationship between the novel and the social reality in India. In The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy expresses the criticism on how the caste system brings a social stratification, through social, politic, economy, religious and science and technology aspects.
