Abstract
The purposes of this research are to describe the implementation of expansion strategies in subtitling of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie, to describe the implementation of deletion strategies in subtitling of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie, and to describe the reasons of the implementation of expansion and deletion strategies in subtitling of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie. The data are written expressions consisting of the expansion strategies and deletion strategies used in the subtitling result in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie. In collecting the data, the writer uses documentation method. The techniques for getting the data are watching the movie, reading the subtitling result, putting sign and making checklist on the expansion and deletion strategies on subtitling result in the movie, gathering the data of expansion and deletion strategies on subtitling result in the movie, and coding the data of expansion and deletion strategies on subtitling result in the movie. The collected data are analyzed by using Nida’s expansion and deletion strategies theory. The results of the research show that (1) the expansion strategies in subtitling are implemented by filling out elliptical expressions, obligatory specification, amplification from implicit to explicit status, classifiers, doublets, and more exact reference to participants. The strategy which is mostly used in expansion strategies is obligatory specification, (2) the deletion strategies in subtitling are implemented by repetitions, specification of reference, conjunction, transitional, and formulae. The strategy which is mostly used in deletion strategies is specification of reference, (3) the reasons in implementing expansion strategies are giving emphasis to the subtitling result, avoiding misleading interpretation, making the understanding easier, and making the subtitling result more natural. While, the reasons in implementing deletion strategies are making the subtitling result shorter, and making the subtitling result more natural. Another finding of the research is that the strategy on subtitling which is more commonly used in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie is deletion strategies.
