Abstract

This study aimed at describing the form of English registers and the meaning of English registers used in trading in "Bisnis Indonesia" newspaper. In collecting the data, the researcher uses documentation method by reading, selecting, and classifying the English registers used in trading in "Bisnis Indonesia" newspaper. To achieve these objectives, she classifies the data based on word and phrase form. Then she applies the Hymes, Wardaugh and Halliday's theory of context in order to get contextual meaning and uses dictionary to get lexical meaning of it. And she applies the Poedjosoedarmo's theory to analyze the change of meaning. The result of her study shows 25 data in form of word and the percentage is 62.5%, it consists of noun (25%), adjective (5%), adverb (2.5), abbreviation (12.5%), compound (17.35%). Besides that, the writer founds 15 data in form of phrase and the percentage is 37.5%, it consists of noun phrase (35%) and verb phrase (2.5%). Through comparison between lexical and contextual meaning of each English register, it is also presented six different meaning of each English register and its percentage. They are: the real meaning of the word could be broader than the new meaning (2.5%), the new meaning of the word could be broader than the real meaning (15%), the real meaning and the new meaning of the word can share some features of meaning whereas such of them has different meaning (7.5%). The real meaning and the new meaning of the word could be identical to each other but used in different field (15%), the real meaning and the new meaning of the word could be quite different (27.5%), and the new meaning does not have the real meaning (32.5%).
