Abstract

In this research, the writer analyzes the sentences made by the students. The purposes of this study are to identify and analyze the errors on sentences in composition that are made by the students. Therefore, the method of this study is descriptive method. The subject of the study is the nineth year b students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta in 2007/ 2008 academic year that consists of 42 students. A writing composition test is used to collect the data. The writer used Surface Strategy Taxonomy in describing the errors. The kinds of errors are classified into four main categories, namely: omission errors, addition errors, misformation errors, and misordering errors. Based on the data analysis, the result of the study shows that there are 743 errors that occur in the students’ compositions. The writer finds that addition errors have the highest frequency of errors that is 398 or 53, 57 % from the total errors. It means that an addition error is the dominant type of error. The conclusion that can be drawn from this study is that the nineth year b students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta still find difficulties in constructing well- formed sentences.
