Abstract

This research, entitled “The Dynamics of Jamsaren Islamic Boarding School in Surakarta”, aims to describe the historical development of Pondok Pesantren Jamsaren Surakarta from its establishment in 1750 to the present day and to analyze the factors influencing its growth. The study employs a historical-sociological approach with a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation from both primary and secondary sources. The findings reveal that the Jamsaren Islamic Boarding School has undergone three major phases of development: (1) the formative phase and the planting of prophetic values (±1750–early 19th century); (2) the phase of revival, struggle, and regeneration (19th–20th century); and (3) the phase of modernization and social adaptation (late 20th century–present). The dynamics of the pesantren were influenced by internal factors such as leadership regeneration, curriculum reform, and the independence of the students, as well as external factors such as socio-political conditions, formal education development, and modern societal demands. Each leadership period demonstrated adaptive responses to changing times. The Jamsaren Islamic Boarding School has successfully maintained its existence for more than two and a half centuries by balancing traditional Islamic values with modern educational needs. Thus, it stands as a dynamic and contextual Islamic educational institution that continues to contribute to Indonesia’s Islamic education system.
