Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine and describe students' problem-solving abilities in applying the Newman method as a way of solving problems in solving contextual problems and to determine students' problem-solving competencies in groups with high, medium, and low levels of problem-solving abilities in solving contextual problems. Problem-solving abilities are a priority in mathematics learning because they aim to develop the abilities of students or teachers. The reality in the world of education, especially problem-solving abilities, which are one of the mathematical abilities of Indonesian students, is still at a low level. This can be seen from the results of PISA 2022 and the results of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). The second problem is that mathematics lessons are considered difficult to understand by many students because when solving they only use formulas and algorithms. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The data used in this study are in the form of written data obtained from the results of students' work in solving test questions on the material of two-variable linear equation systems and the results of interviews with students selected by researchers to be research subjects. The conclusion of this study is that the group of students with high level problem solving abilities are able to solve contextual problems well but there are errors in mentioning a word, the group of students with moderate level problem solving abilities are able to solve problems to the final stage but there are still many errors at the stage of understanding the problem, namely writing down what is known and what is asked incorrectly and the group of students with low level problem solving abilities are only able to solve problems to the problem transformation stage.
