Abstract

Background: Autism is a complex developmental disorder that has a significant impact on both the child and their family. This condition affects various aspects such as the child's social skills, language, behavior, and communication abilities, requiring special attention in their growth and development process. In this context, parental knowledge about autism becomes crucial. With a solid understanding, parents can provide more effective and appropriate support for their child, helping to maximize their development. However, many parents still do not fully understand the needs of children with autism, which can influence the child's developmental outcomes. Objective: This study aims to assess the relationship between parental knowledge and the development of children with autism at SDHT Cimahi. Method: A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was used. Data were collected from 50 parents at SDHT Cimahi in March 2024. Parental knowledge was measured using the Parent Knowledge Survey on Autism (PKSA), and child development was assessed using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). Data analysis involved univariate and bivariate analyses, with chi-square testing for significant relationships between variables. Results: The study found that 96% of parents had good knowledge, while 4% had insufficient knowledge. Among the 50 children, 48% showed good development, and 52% showed poor development. The chi-square test resulted in a p-value of 0.241, indicating no significant relationship between parental knowledge and child development. Conclusion: The study indicates no significant relationship between parental knowledge and the development of children with autism at SDHT Cimahi, although parental knowledge remains important for appropriate intervention. Additional attention is needed for parents with less knowledge to ensure all children with autism receive optimal support.
