Abstract

Freshwater ecosystems like reservoirs, rivers, and wetlands are vital for supporting human life and the environment. Cengklik Reservoir in Central Java, a key water source for irrigation, fisheries, and domestic use, is experiencing water quality decline due to human activities. A primary issue is increased phosphorus levels, which trigger eutrophication. Diatoms, microscopic algae sensitive to environmental changes, serve as biological indicators to assess aquatic ecosystem quality. This research aims to analyze the abundance of diatoms in the Cengklik Reservoir, examine the spatial dynamics of phosphorus nutrient concentration in the Cengklik Reservoir, and assess the relationship between phosphorus nutrient concentration and diatom abundance in the Cengklik Reservoir. The research method involved sediment sampling at three main stations: center, inlet, and outlet, using an Ekman Grab. Total phosphorus was measured with spectrophotometry, while diatom abundance was analyzed through three stages: digestion, preparation, and microscopic identification. Results indicate significant variation in phosphorus concentrations and diatom abundance across sampling stations. The outlet station recorded the highest diatom abundance (90 valves) and phosphorus concentration (522.38 ppm), reflecting more stable environmental conditions and better nutrient support. In contrast, the inlet station showed the lowest abundance (38 valves) and phosphorus level (304.98 ppm), indicating less optimal water conditions. The phosphorus distribution from inlet to outlet suggests nutrient accumulation influenced by anthropogenic activities like fish farming. This study provides essential insights into the impact of phosphorus on diatom abundance and ecosystem quality. The findings offer a valuable foundation for conservation and reservoir management to maintain the health of aquatic ecosystems.
