Abstract
Defamation is becoming an increasingly concerning phenomenon in both social and legal contexts within many modern societies. This study aims to investigate the concepts, impacts, and legal protections concerning defamation. Defamation occurs when someone or an entity falsely creates, spreads, or maintains information that damages the reputation of an individual or group. The research outlines various forms of defamation, including libel, slander, and the dissemination of false information, as well as their psychological, social, and economic impacts on affected individuals. The researcher emphasizes the importance of ethical communication through social media, highlighting that without ethical understanding, issues such as defamation, social media violations, and the legal considerations faced by judges in adjudicating such cases can arise. This research employs a juridical method with a legal research approach, utilizing secondary data from primary, secondary, and tertiary legal sources gathered through literature review, subsequently analyzed descriptively. The findings indicate that defamation on social media can degrade or insult an individual's dignity through misuse of defamatory writings, incitement, or misleading information. Therefore, this study aims to provide a better understanding of the complexities of this issue and efforts for protection that can be implemented within applicable legal frameworks.
