Abstract

This study focuses on translation shifts on verb phrases in the subtitles of The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run (2020). The objectives of this study are to (1) classify the types of translation shifts found in verb phrases in the subtitles of The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run (2020) and (2) describe the equivalence of translation shifts found in verb phrases in the subtitles of The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run (2020). This study is a qualitative descriptive study. The object of this study is the translated subtitles of the film entitled The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run (2020). In collecting data, the researcher used documentation techniques. In this study, 89 data of verb phrases were found. To determine the data, the researcher applied Catford's translation theory to compare the source language and target language texts. This study shows 2 types of translation shifts in verb phrases found in the translated subtitles of the film The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run (2020), namely level shifts and structure shifts. In level shifts, the data found amounted to 77 or 86.52%. There are 4 types of shifts that include level shifts, namely 11 or 12.36% of data changes in verb phrases to adjectives, 4 or 4.50% of data changes in verb phrases to adverbs, 1 or 1.12% of data changes in verb phrases to nouns, 61 or 68.54% of data changes in verb phrases to verbs. Then, the researcher found 12 data or 13.48% on the structural shift, consisting of 9 or 10.11% of the verb phrase data into adjective phrases, 1 or 1.12% of the verb phrase data into adverbial phrases, and 2 or 2.25% of the verb phrase data into noun phrases. The equivalence found in the data amounted to 87 data or 97.75%, while the other 2 data or 2.25% of the data were not equivalent.
