Abstract

Filter bubble is a situation where the information that appears on our social media is uniform. Filter bubble causes users to be isolated in a homogeneous 'bubble' of information and reinforces their own views without seeing different points of view. This is caused by social media algorithm filters that filter existing information and only display what is in accordance with the preferences of the social media owner. It could be that what is on social media A is very different from what is on social media B. Filter Bubble is defined as a situation where someone is reluctant to see or hear ideas, perspectives, or other alternatives that are different from their own perspective. Then that person prefers to hear ideas from people whose thoughts are the same as their own. Filter bubble exacerbates political polarization by exposing users only to information that supports their beliefs, while opposing information is ignored. This can lead to political fanaticism, where individuals become very convinced that their views are the most correct and reject other views. In the context of the 2024 Presidential Election, the polarization triggered by the filter bubble can deepen the political divide in society. Social media, including YouTube, plays a major role in political campaigns. They facilitate the spread of political messages widely and quickly. However, the impact is not always positive. In addition to increasing public participation, social media can also be used to spread disinformation and strengthen identity politics, which can divide society. In the 2024 Presidential Election, the use of filter bubbles is expected to influence voter behavior by strengthening existing political preferences and reducing openness to new information or different views. This can increase identity political fanaticism, where voters are more likely to support candidates who fit their group identity and reject other candidates without adequate rational consideration. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of filter bubbles on the formation of identity political fanaticism behavior of YouTube platform users in the 2024 Presidential Election. This study used a quantitative descriptive method. The results showed a significant positive correlation between exposure to homogeneous political content on YouTube and increased identity political fanaticism behavior. This finding supports the assumption of the Use and Gratification theory that users selectively consume content that suits their needs and preferences, which ultimately strengthens political polarization.
