Abstract

The conflict between the Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate (PSHT) and the Brajamusti supporter group in Yogyakarta stems from an incident of mistreatment of a PSHT member in Parangtritis. The rapid response of the Bantul branch of PSHT, which mobilized hundreds of members to clarify, triggered a major clash in the center of Yogyakarta. Analysis of this conflict shows the central role of social identity in triggering violence. Both PSHT and Brajamusti have strong group identities, characterized by a sense of community, solidarity and positive values attached to their respective groups. This strong social identity can trigger excessive protective behavior when the group feels threatened or insulted. This conflict is a clear example of how social identity, if not managed well, can trigger inter-group violence. To prevent similar conflicts in the future, efforts are needed to improve dialogue between groups, strengthen education about tolerance and mutual respect, and the active role of the government in maintaining security and order.
